IBM is doubling down on agentic AI for the enterprise. On July 9, the company announced major updates to IBM Bob, its agentic software development platform, adding multi-agent coordination capabilities, built-in AI cost analytics (dubbed "Bobalytics"), and pre-built specialized workflows for modernizing legacy systems.
The updates address what IBM says is the next bottleneck in AI-assisted development: 85% of DevSecOps professionals surveyed agree AI has shifted the bottleneck from writing code to reviewing and validating it. Bob aims to solve this by coordinating AI across the entire software development lifecycle rather than limiting it to a single interface.
Perhaps the most striking result came from Blue Pearl, a cloud solutions company. A legacy modernization program originally projected to take 9 months with 14 engineers was completed in just 3 days using IBM Bob. "The most powerful outcome wasn't the speed — it was the combination of operational efficiency, cost optimization, and real-world results we could trust and build on," said Saireshan Govender, Group CEO of Blue Pearl.
New features include: - Bobalytics: monitors consumption, allocates resources, and provides cost/performance visibility - Parallel model-native tool calling: models can request and run multiple tools simultaneously - Subagents: handle complex exploratory work in isolated contexts to manage context window costs
IBM also launched three premium packages targeting specific modernization challenges: IBM Z (mainframe COBOL/PLI modernization), IBM i, and Java Modernization, each built on decades of IBM's domain expertise.
