Hugging Face, the open-source AI platform often described as the GitHub of machine learning, is reportedly exploring a sale that could value the company at more than $13 billion, according to Business Insider. If the deal materializes, it would represent nearly triple the $4.5 billion valuation the company carried after its last confirmed funding round in August 2023.
The exploration is particularly striking given Hugging Face's track record of prioritizing independence over quick exits. CEO Clément Delangue previously rejected a $500 million investment from Nvidia that would have valued the company at $7 billion, and has publicly expressed a preference for an IPO over a sale.
Founded in 2016, Hugging Face has built itself into the central hub for open-source AI development, hosting hundreds of thousands of machine learning models, datasets, and applications. The company raised $235 million in its Series D round from Salesforce Ventures, Google, Amazon, and Nvidia.
In recent years, Hugging Face has expanded aggressively beyond its core model-hub business. The company acquired Pollen Robotics, a humanoid robotics startup, in April 2025, along with earlier purchases of Gradio (ML demo tools), XetHub (dataset version control), and Argilla (data labeling). Each acquisition filled a gap in the AI development workflow from training to deployment.
The potential sale comes at a turbulent moment for the AI industry, with OpenAI's recent Hugging Face hack, rising infrastructure costs, and intensifying competition from both open-source and proprietary model providers. A sale could reshape the competitive landscape of open-source AI, where Hugging Face has served as a neutral platform trusted by researchers and companies alike.
