Hugging Face, the open-source AI platform that has become a central pillar of AI infrastructure, has reportedly been fielding acquisition offers that would value the company at around $13 billion, according to a Business Insider report.

No deal has yet been reached, and it remains unclear who Hugging Face has been in talks with. However, the startup has reportedly been engaging banks to help evaluate bids.

The talks come amid surging interest in companies providing core AI infrastructure services, a trend underscored by Stripe's recent $7 billion acquisition of OpenRouter. Hugging Face last raised funding in 2023 at a $4.5 billion post-money valuation in a round led by Salesforce Ventures, with participation from Alphabet, GV, IBM Ventures, and others.

The acquisition chatter raises complex questions about the future of open-source AI. CEO Clem Delangue has repeatedly emphasized the company's long-term responsibility to its community of millions of users. On the TechCrunch Equity podcast, Delangue described Hugging Face as close to profitability and noted the company had only recently started to spend the money raised three years ago.

We're building a platform for the community, and they're trusting us with sharing their data and their models on the platform, so we have a long-term responsibility to them, Delangue said. He added that the company was focused on long-term sustainability rather than short-term profits or fundraising maximization.

The company earlier this year turned down a $500 million investment from Nvidia that would have valued it at $7 billion, saying at the time that it didn't want a single dominant investor to sway decisions. That stance suggests Hugging Face's founders may view any acquisition through the lens of community trust rather than pure financial return.

Hugging Face has grown into one of the most widely used platforms in AI, with roughly half the Fortune 500 now using its services. The platform has become indispensable for AI builders who increasingly turn to open-source models as they scale and face rising API costs.

The outcome of these talks will be closely watched across the AI industry, as Hugging Face represents one of the last major independent open-source AI infrastructure companies.
