Grokipedia, the AI-generated encyclopedia that Elon Musk once promised would be 'a massive improvement over Wikipedia', is showing signs of life again after a months-long freeze. In August, Lawfare reported that articles on the site had not had edits reviewed since April. Now the platform's live-updates page is displaying recent changes — though as The Verge noted, many of them are simply a note reading 'recheck all references and sources'.
The activity appears to have resumed recently. The page for Barack Obama carries a note saying it was 'Fact-checked by Grok' two days earlier, and the page for Musk was fact-checked while a reporter was writing about it. Not every page is so fresh: the entry for Honolulu, reached from Obama's page, was last fact-checked seven months ago, suggesting the review process is uneven.
The Verge also tested the system directly. After suggesting an update to the Gears of War: E-Day page to reflect the game's October 6 release date, the reporter found Grokipedia accepted the change. A request for a new article about Meta's Muse chatbot was marked 'In Review'. SpaceXAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and Musk has not posted about Grokipedia on X since February. Benji Taylor, head of design at X and SpaceXAI, wrote last week that 'We haven't forgotten about Grokipedia' and teased a version 0.2.
For a project built to attack Wikipedia's relevance, the question now is whether an AI encyclopedia can keep itself current at all — or whether it will remain a sporadically updated, machine-written shadow of the real thing.
