Google DeepMind plans to publicly unveil Gemini 3.8 Flash on Wednesday, September 2, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal and AI Weekly. The model, internally codenamed 'skimaki,' has been tested on Google's internal Jetski coding platform throughout August.
Flash 3.8 is positioned as a refinement over Flash 3.7, which shipped on August 13, and is said to cut verbose outputs while maintaining competitive performance. The release maintains Google's roughly one-model-per-month cadence under CEO Sundar Pichai.
Separately, the WSJ reports that Gemini 4 has performed well on pre-training evaluations but still requires additional post-training work before release.
The launch targets Anthropic's Claude Fable 5, which remains a competitive benchmark in coding and knowledge work. Google's rapid release pace reflects intensifying competition in the frontier model space.
