The White House used its 'Science: A New Golden Age' summit on Thursday to expand the Genesis Mission — an effort to apply AI to federally funded research — to 14 additional agencies, and to collect roughly $2.4 billion in computing commitments from the companies best positioned to supply it.
According to the administration and statements from the companies, Nvidia is contributing commitments valued at $1 billion over five years for super-intelligence and quantum-computing research; OpenAI is offering $200 million in token discounts and training programs for scientists; Anthropic is providing about $150 million over three years in access to its Claude models; and Amazon Web Services is adding up to $50 million in cloud credits. Google and other firms are also taking part, Politico reported.
'With a $1 billion investment, NVIDIA is putting advanced Super Intelligence in the hands of America's scientists to accelerate breakthroughs in medicine, energy and materials,' Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in a statement. The company framed the pledge as an extension of two decades of work with national laboratories and of a Department of Energy supercomputer it is building at Argonne National Laboratory.
The same event doubled as a ceremony. President Trump presented the National Medal of Science to Elon Musk, Jensen Huang, Sergey Brin and AMD's Lisa Su, and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation to Dell Technologies' Michael Dell and Microsoft's Satya Nadella. TechCrunch noted that the honorees have collectively donated nearly $6 billion to efforts tied to Trump and his administration, and that Nadella received his medal shortly after the administration suspended Microsoft from the H-1B visa program.
The commitments are in compute, model access and credits rather than direct cash, and they arrive as federal science agencies gain standing access to commercial frontier models. The open questions are whether the expanded mission turns into published research, and how the government manages its dependence on a handful of vendors to run it.
