Fuse Energy Technologies Corp., a California-based fusion startup, announced on August 11 that it has achieved the highest fusion neutron yield ever recorded by a private company — 1.27×10¹² neutrons in a single shot from its FAETON-X dense plasma focus generator.
The milestone is significant because it represents the first time a private company has publicly documented neutron yields in the 10¹² range, a threshold previously attained only by U.S. national laboratories. On a per-megajoule basis, FAETON-X now outperforms Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's MJOLNIR facility, delivering approximately 40% more neutrons per megajoule of stored energy.
The achievement rests on a key physics principle: in pulsed-power z-pinch devices, neutron yield scales as the fourth power of drive current. FAETON-X achieved a record current efficiency of 4.5 MA per megajoule — far exceeding the 2.25–3.25 MA/MJ range of all previously published peer devices, government or private.
"Fusion has reached an inflection point, and private companies are now at the forefront of technology development," said CEO JC Btaiche. The company went from design to first shot in nine months, then from first shot to breaking records in another nine months — all while completing regulatory approvals in California.
Fuse's achievement is part of a broader wave of private fusion milestones in 2026. The Fusion Industry Association reported record annual funding of $4.48 billion for the sector, while Helion Energy achieved 150 million °C plasma temperatures and Inertia Enterprises raised $450 million to commercialize laser-based inertial confinement fusion.
