Emerald AI, a startup that builds software to make AI data centers responsive to power grid conditions, has raised $150 million in Series A funding at a $1.05 billion valuation, the company announced on Monday.

The round makes Emerald AI a unicorn — a privately held startup valued at $1 billion or more — and positions the company at the intersection of two of the fastest-growing sectors in technology: artificial intelligence infrastructure and energy grid management.

Emerald AI's core technology enables data centers to dynamically adjust their electricity consumption based on real-time grid conditions. When the power grid is under strain, data centers running Emerald AI's software can reduce their load, helping to prevent blackouts and stabilize the grid. When conditions are favorable, they can ramp up consumption to take advantage of cheaper, often renewable, electricity.

This approach addresses one of the most pressing challenges facing the AI industry: the enormous and growing power demands of AI data centers. Training and running large AI models requires vast amounts of electricity, and the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure has put significant strain on electrical grids in regions across the United States and globally.

Traditional data centers are rigid consumers of electricity — they draw a relatively constant load regardless of grid conditions. This inflexibility forces grid operators to build excess generation capacity to handle peak demand, which is expensive and often relies on fossil fuel-powered plants.

By making data centers flexible consumers, Emerald AI's approach could unlock faster grid connections for new AI facilities, reduce the need for expensive grid upgrades, and help integrate more renewable energy into the power system. The company said its technology can help data centers earn revenue by providing demand-response services to grid operators.

The funding round was led by major institutional investors, though Emerald AI did not immediately disclose the full list of participants. The company said the new capital would be used to scale its software platform and expand its customer base.

Texas-based Emerald AI said its system has already been deployed at multiple data center facilities and is generating revenue. The company projects it will generate $600 million in annual revenue by 2027, though that projection is based on the rapid growth trajectory of its customer pipeline.

The company's approach is particularly relevant in Texas, where the power grid has faced reliability challenges and where a large concentration of AI data centers is being built. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has been grappling with how to accommodate the surge in electricity demand from AI facilities while maintaining grid stability.

"AI is the biggest driver of new electricity demand in a generation," said Emerald AI's CEO. "Our technology ensures that this new demand strengthens the grid rather than straining it."

The investment reflects growing investor interest in the "picks and shovels" layer of the AI industry — the infrastructure and tools that enable AI systems to operate efficiently. As AI models grow larger and more computationally intensive, the supporting infrastructure becomes increasingly critical.

Emerald AI plans to expand into new markets and develop additional features for its platform, including predictive analytics for grid operators and enhanced integration with renewable energy sources.
