Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has closed its first-ever external funding round, raising more than 50 billion yuan (7.4 billion dollars) at a valuation exceeding 50 billion dollars in a deal that has become as notable for its unusual structure as its size.

The Round

The funding, reported by The Information and confirmed by Reuters, brings together 12 institutional investors including tech conglomerate Tencent, battery giant CATL, and Chinas National Artificial Intelligence Industry Investment Fund. It is the largest private AI funding round in Chinese history.

Key investors and their contributions: - Liang Wenfeng (CEO): 20 billion yuan (approximately 2.9 billion dollars), the single largest cheque in the round - Tencent: 10 billion yuan (approximately 1.5 billion dollars) - CATL: 5 billion yuan (approximately 740 million dollars) - Chinas National AI Industry Investment Fund: Invested directly in DeepSeek (the only entity with voting rights and freedom from lock-up)

The Structure: Control Preserved

What makes this round extraordinary is its deal structure. Instead of investing directly in DeepSeek, investors purchased stakes in a limited partnership managed by Liang Wenfeng himself. This gives Liang absolute control over the company while providing investors with financial exposure.

The terms are strict: - Five-year lock-up period for all investors - No voting rights for any investor except the National AI Industry Investment Fund - Liang maintains operational and strategic control despite bringing in outside capital for the first time

Investors do not buy DeepSeek. They buy into a limited partnership Liang manages, so he keeps absolute control while they get exposure, noted one analyst.

Why Now: The Mythos Catalyst

According to The Information, the fundraising was spurred by the release of Anthropics Mythos model, which demonstrated capabilities that alarmed DeepSeeks leadership. The company plans to use the funds to:

- Double its workforce to accelerate research and development - Build out computing infrastructure, including adoption of Huawei chips as an alternative to restricted Nvidia hardware - Maintain its research-first philosophy, Liang told investors that restraint is the business model and that team stability is DeepSeeks core interest

Context: From Underdog to National Champion

DeepSeek became Chinas national AI champion and garnered global fame in early 2025 when its V3 and R1 models drew widespread praise in Silicon Valley and challenged US assumptions about Chinas AI capabilities.

The company had previously operated without external funding, relying on resources from High-Flyer, the quantitative hedge fund Liang also founded. This first external round marks a significant shift as DeepSeek transitions from a lean research lab to a well-funded AI powerhouse competing at the frontier.

What It Means for the AI Race

The round underscores several trends in the global AI landscape:

1. Chinas AI ambitions are well-capitalized: A 50B+ valuation for DeepSeek signals serious institutional confidence in Chinas ability to compete at the AI frontier 2. Founder control remains paramount: The limited partnership structure mirrors a growing trend of AI founders seeking to raise massive capital without ceding control 3. The Huawei pivot: DeepSeeks planned adoption of Huawei chips represents a significant bet on Chinas domestic semiconductor ecosystem as US export controls continue to restrict access to advanced Nvidia hardware

DeepSeek now holds one of the largest war chests in the global AI industry, positioned to accelerate its challenge to US AI labs while maintaining the research culture that produced some of 2025s most impactful AI models.
