Xiaomi and Chinese memory chipmaker CXMT have confirmed that the upcoming Xiaomi 18 Fold smartphone will be among the first devices worldwide to ship with LPDDR6 DRAM — and the chips will be made in China.
The announcement marks a significant milestone for China's push toward semiconductor self-sufficiency. LPDDR6 is the next generation of low-power memory for mobile devices, offering substantially higher bandwidth and lower power consumption than the current LPDDR5X standard. Until now, the LPDDR6 market has been dominated by Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron.
CXMT's LPDDR6 chips will be paired with Xiaomi's in-house-designed 3nm Xring O3 system-on-chip, making the Xiaomi 18 Fold a showcase for domestic Chinese semiconductor capabilities across both logic and memory.
The achievement is notable because memory manufacturing is among the most technically demanding segments of the semiconductor industry. Successfully shipping LPDDR6 places CXMT in a very small club of manufacturers capable of producing cutting-edge mobile memory.
The timing is geopolitically significant. The United States has imposed extensive export controls on advanced semiconductor technology to China, creating urgency around domestic chip development. For Xiaomi, the partnership reduces dependence on foreign memory suppliers at a time when supply chain security has become a top priority.
