John Ternus wants you to know that the iPhone isn't going anywhere.
In his first keynote as Apple CEO, Ternus threw his weight behind the venerable device, placing it firmly at the center of Apple's product strategy for the AI era. "There's no product in the world better designed to be your intelligent personal hub than iPhone," he said.
A Deliberate Contrast with Tim Cook
The move marks a sharp departure from the approach taken by former CEO Tim Cook, who spent years trying to convince Wall Street that Apple was more than just the iPhone. Under Cook, Apple diversified aggressively into services, wearables, and other categories, often framing the iPhone as a mature product in a portfolio — not the star.
Pundits had been leaning into this narrative. "The smartphone's days are numbered," read one headline. "The Tim Cook era is coming to a close with an existential challenge for Apple: figuring out what comes after the iPhone," declared another.
Ternus' keynote is a direct rebuttal to all of it.
The Jobs Parallel
TechCrunch's Tim De Chant drew a striking parallel: Steve Jobs did something very similar in 2001 with the Mac. At a Macworld New York keynote, Jobs called out bearish quotes from industry analysts and executives at Compaq and Gateway who had declared the PC was dying. Less than 10 months later, Jobs announced the iPod — but only after firmly re-establishing the Mac as the hub of Apple's digital ecosystem.
Ternus appears to be following the same playbook. Rather than distancing the iPhone from Apple's identity, he is doubling down on it as the "intelligent personal assistant" hub — the center of gravity for Apple's AI capabilities.
What It Means for Apple's AI Strategy
By centering the iPhone, Ternus is making a clear architectural bet: the phone is where AI lives, where Siri gets smarter, where the most personal and context-aware features converge. This isn't just a product pitch — it's a statement about where Apple sees its competitive advantage in the AI era.
The approach suggests that Apple's AI strategy will be device-first, cloud-second — consistent with the company's historical emphasis on on-device processing and privacy, as seen in the new Audio Intelligence features announced alongside the iPhone Duo.
Context
Ternus delivered this keynote on September 9, 2026, at Apple's "Surprise and Shine" event, where the company also unveiled the iPhone Duo (its first foldable), the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, and new Apple Watch models with Audio Intelligence capabilities.
