Anthropic on September 2 unveiled Enterprise Frontier Safeguards (EFS), a new data residency offering that allows regulated customers to store Claude conversation data in their own cloud storage buckets — S3, Azure Blob, or Google Cloud Storage — with customer-managed encryption keys.
The launch addresses a significant enterprise pain point: Anthropic had previously maintained a 30-day data retention policy that it acknowledged was 'unpopular and a business risk.' EFS eliminates this by giving customers full control over their data while Anthropic runs automated misuse detection without human review.
The offering is free and covers Claude Code, Claude Enterprise, Claude Platform, AWS Bedrock, Google Agent Platform, and Microsoft Foundry. It will roll out in phases this fall. In the interim, eligible customers receive zero data retention on Fable 5 and Fable 5.1.
The move is particularly significant for heavily regulated industries like finance, healthcare, and government, where data sovereignty requirements have been a barrier to AI adoption. It also comes amid heightened scrutiny of AI companies' data practices.
