Anthropic has named Mariano-Florentino 'Tino' Cuéllar as its first Chief Global Affairs Officer, placing a former California Supreme Court justice and former president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace at the helm of its policy, strategic international engagement and government relationships worldwide.
Cuéllar, who reports directly to President Daniela Amodei, steps down from Anthropic's Long-Term Benefit Trust — where he had served as trustee since January 2026 — to join the company. His résumé spans three presidential administrations, Stanford's Freeman Spogli Institute, the President's Intelligence Advisory Board and the State Department's Foreign Affairs Policy Board; he also co-chaired the bipartisan Task Force on Nuclear Proliferation and American Security and co-led California's Frontier AI Working Group.
The appointment comes at a delicate moment. Reuters reports the company is navigating tensions with the Trump administration, contesting its placement on a Pentagon blacklist and fighting export controls on its models, while preparing for a possible IPO. 'Democracies must set the terms on which this technology advances, and there is no more consequential place to be shaping that work right now than Anthropic,' Cuéllar said. Amodei called him 'the best-prepared person I can think of to partner with governments, civil society and community groups.'
