Anthropic announced the release of Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 on September 1, 2026, describing the pair as its most advanced models to date for coding and knowledge work. The company also noted that the models' research capabilities offer an early glimpse of how AI systems will contribute to scientific progress.

The launch comes amid a period of intense model competition in the AI industry. Anthropic has been rapidly iterating on its Claude lineup throughout 2026, with the Claude Opus 5 release in July already marking a significant step forward. The new Fable and Mythos 5.1 updates represent the latest iteration of Anthropic's two-tier model architecture — Fable optimized for speed and everyday coding tasks, Mythos for deep reasoning and complex knowledge work.

Anthropic's newsroom page lists the models under its current product hierarchy: Mythos, Fable, Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku, with Mythos and Fable positioned as the frontier tiers. The company did not immediately disclose benchmark comparisons or pricing changes for the new versions.

The release also follows Anthropic's September 1 alignment and security update, in which the company detailed how it hardened its evaluation environments and reinforcement learning training pipelines after three cybersecurity incidents in July. The company redirected roughly 150 engineers to security efforts earlier in 2026, ahead of the Mythos-class model deployments.

Anthropic's IPO plans remain on track for late 2026, with the company reportedly meeting investors to shore up confidence ahead of a public market debut that could value the company among the highest in the AI sector.
