Advanced Micro Devices on Wednesday announced a landmark strategic partnership with Anthropic and said it will invest up to $5 billion in the AI company, intensifying the infrastructure arms race between frontier AI labs.
As part of the deal, Anthropic committed to deploying 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs in AMD Helios rack-scale solutions. The first gigawatt will be deployed in the first half of 2027, according to a release.
"We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Anthropic and deploy AMD Helios at gigawatt scale," AMD CEO Lisa Su said in a statement.
Anthropic's Infrastructure Empire The deal adds to Anthropic's sprawling portfolio of compute partnerships. The company already has agreements with SpaceX at $1.25 billion per month through May 2029 for Colossus 1 data center capacity, a multi-billion-dollar compute agreement with Amazon, a multi-gigawatt compute deal with Google and Broadcom signed in April, and preliminary talks with Meta to lease computing power.
Anthropic has experienced explosive growth this year, partly because of the success of its AI coding assistant, Claude Code. Its run-rate revenue topped $47 billion in May, up from roughly $10 billion over the entirety of 2025. The company closed a funding round at a $965 billion valuation in May and confidentially filed for IPO with the SEC in June.
AMD's AI Ambitions AMD has been one of the major beneficiaries of the AI boom, competing directly with Nvidia's dominant GPU market position. In a parallel deal, AMD issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock — roughly 10% of the company — with vesting milestones tied to deployment volume and share price.
At AMD's Advancing AI 2026 event earlier this week, CEO Lisa Su unveiled the Helios rack-scale system and forecast a $1.4 trillion AI chip market by 2030, positioning the company at the center of the next wave of AI infrastructure buildout.
