Amazon's Prime Air drone delivery service is undergoing its most aggressive expansion yet, with plans to reach nearly 500 cities and towns across the United States by the end of 2026 — a sixfold increase from its current operations in seven states.
The service, which currently operates from 11 sites in Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, and Texas, will soon launch in Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Boise, with more communities to follow. Prime Air already handles thousands of deliveries daily and has delivered hundreds of thousands of packages by drone this year.
Items weighing five pounds or less that fit in a large shoebox are eligible for drone delivery, covering more than 60% of Amazon's most frequently purchased items. Customers can order groceries, electronics, cosmetics, medications, and household products with delivery in as fast as 30 minutes. Prime members receive free drone delivery on orders over $50; orders under $50 cost $2.99 for Prime members and $4.99 for non-members.
Amazon holds FAA Part 135 certification — the same framework used for commercial air carriers — and its proprietary Detect-and-Avoid system enables drones to independently monitor airspace and make real-time safety decisions. The drones operate fully electric with zero exhaust emissions, and their noise levels during drop-off are below that of an idling delivery truck.
The expansion signals Amazon's confidence that drone delivery has moved beyond the experimental phase into mainstream logistics, positioning it alongside Same-Day and Next-Day delivery as a core pillar of its fulfillment network.
