Alipay, the payments arm of Ant Group, has launched China's first full-stack agentic commerce platform at its AI Ecosystem Partner Conference in Hangzhou on August 17. The platform allows merchants to convert their existing pages, product catalogs, and business workflows into agent-ready skills and MCP (Model Context Protocol) tools that can be discovered and executed by AI agents.
At the center of the platform is Ah Bao, Alipay's consumer-facing AI agent, which connects to merchants through the AHA (Agent Hub Access) interoperability protocol. The protocol is designed to enable cross-agent and cross-device interoperability, allowing AI agents from different ecosystems to interact with merchant services.
The launch partners are significant: KFC, Luckin Coffee, Mixue Bingcheng, 16 automakers, and phone brands representing over 70% of China's smartphone market share are already integrated. Alipay is subsidizing 100 million free tokens per user to seed adoption of the platform.
Alibaba shares jumped as much as 5% in Hong Kong on the news. The platform represents a strategic push by Ant Group to position Alipay at the center of China's emerging 'agentic commerce' ecosystem — where AI agents autonomously browse, compare, and purchase goods on behalf of consumers.
The AHA protocol is notable as an early example of an interoperability standard for AI commerce, potentially setting the template for how payments, shopping, and service discovery work in an agent-mediated economy.
